Solaris 2.6 - Replacement ATA Hard Drive > 8GB

Hi,

I have a legacy SUN Ultra 10 running Solaris 2.6. I need to replace a
failed ATA hard drive and have purchased a good quality Seagate 40GB. I
understand that Solaris 2.6 is capped at 8GB and cannot easily make use
of the extra disk space. I'm OK with that.

When I install Solaris, I set the total size of the partitions
(including the swap) to be under 8GB. However, when I restart the SUN I
get a Disk Label Corrupted - Bad Geometry error message. When I check
the partitions I see number 2 - backup sized at 11.53GB and suspect this
is the root of the error. I try to resize the partition and get a
Warning indicating the "Partition with V_Backup tag should specify full
disk capacity".

I have searched for a solution without much luck. Would anyone have an
idea how to get around this?

Thanks for your time.
Larry Williams
