For the future reference of any other long suffering poor souls who have
to do this here is the procedure in full
vxplex -g rootdg -o rm dis mirror-plex <repeated for all plexes on the
volume>
vxdg -g rootdg rmdisk mirror-disk
vxunroot
reboot
lucreate -c Solaris8 -m /:/dev/dsk/slice-name:ufs -n Solaris9
luupgrade -u -n Solaris9 -s /mnt
The upgrade is running now as I speak.
