Disk read error

i'm experiencing an odd network boot issue while trying to transition from a
Solaris 9 SPARC boot server to Solaris 10 SPARC. both systems are able to
successfully serve net boot clients running Solaris 9 and 10 SPARC however
when attempting to net boot a Solaris 10 x86 client i'm hitting the error
"Error 25: Disk read error". FWIW, i get the same result for Solars 10 x86
U1 and U2.

my jumpstart environment has been rsynced from two known good servers. i
have been able to reproduce this error with all five x86 servers i have
attempted to jumpstart, all were able to successfully boot from an identical
Solaris 9 server.

the client ends with the following:

kernel /I86PC.Solaris_10-2/multiboot kernel/unix -B
console=ttya,output-device=
ttya,input-device=ttya,install_config=10.16.70.50:/export/jumpstart,sysid_conf
ig=10.16.70.50:/export/jumpstart/Sysidcfg/Solaris_10/10.16.70.0,install_media
=10.16.70.50:/export/jumpstart/OS/S10_200606_x86,install_boot=10.16.70.50:/ex
port/jumpstart/OS/S10_200606_x86/boot

Error 25: Disk read error

Press any key to continue...

a md5 checksum shows that /I86PC.Solaris_10-2/multiboot is identical between
my Solaris 9 and 10 boot servers.

the client seems to be dying while trying to transfer the mini-root image so
the failure is after GRUB has completed and before NFS is used, this should
clear these two possibilities.

a snoop from the server shows:

10.16.70.105 -> OLD-BROADCAST TFTP Read "/I86PC.Solaris_10-2/multiboot"
(octet)
10.16.70.50 -> 10.16.70.105 UDP D=2079 S=32879 LEN=23

10.16.70.50 -> 10.16.70.105 TFTP Data block 2 (1432 bytes)

10.16.70.50 is the serve and 10.16.70.105 is the client.

any suggestions?
