Thanks go to Matthew Hannigan, Brian Catlin and Bill R. Williams who
provided all the same answer: this is a bug in the SSH that is used (in
this case, an F-Secure SSH client version 3.2.3). We will see to upgrade
to OpenSSH to resolve this.

Also thanks to Chris Hoogendyk who provided an idea for a temporary
workaround (a wrapper that kills the connection after a certain period of
time).
