SAMBA, LDAP and local authentication

I've been tasked with providing UNIX file access for people authenticating
using LDAP. Up until now we've been using SAMBA and authenticating through
a BDC. Windows XP ADS no longer gives us this option, so we have to move to
LDAP. The powers that be do NOT want the UNIX servers doing LDAP
authentication locally - they want to rely upon a downstream LDAP server.
I've RTFM'd and googled and I don't see how this is possible. At an
absolutely minimum, I need to compile LDAP support into SAMBA (I suspect
sunfreeware's version doesn't support it) and that support presumes local
libraries and authentication - right?

So:

1. How do I compile SAMBA for remote LDAP authentication, rather than
local?
2. How do I configure it?
