thanks to musa, john, and rich for the quick replies:
indeed the dead nfs my machine expected to connect to was the cause
... seems like there should be a time out ... maybe i didn't have one
specified.
in any event boot -s ing into single user mode and editing out the nfs
line in vfstab seems to have done wonders. my server boots again.
i didn't have to mount the root filesystem (i got an error when i
tried - already mounted, or busy), so i cd 'd to / and /etc/vfstab was
there.
