Tip hardwire assistance

I'm trying to use some machines setup way back that are using tip
hardwire to access each others console. This has worked fine on a few
of these machines, but I now have 3 that everytime I try to connect that
way I get some intelligble text and then it turns to garbage very
quickly. My serial port/terminal/modem fu is long gone, but something
tells me it's a flow control issue or something similar. When it occurs
I can still see that we are getting the banner (even if it's in mixed up
letters) and the login prompt. But I can't figure out why it's doing it
on these three Netra's.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to look into to fix this?

My /etc/hardwire looks like this on all of them:
hardwire:\
        :dv=/dev/term/b:br#9600:el=^C^S^Q^U^D:ie=%$:oe=^D:
