HBA driver behavior and Solaris 10

All,

I have a pair of X4200s running the 1/06 release of Solaris 10 x86.
Each host also has Veritas Storage Foundation HA V4.1 installed. Both have a
pair of Emulex lp10000-E hba cards. The cards are each connected to brocade
switches fronting a clariion cx-600. Each host has some issues, but this post
is for a real show stopper... One host's hba cards stopped working today after
I removed, then reinstalled the SUNWemlxs package.
I did this because I
thought the driver versions were different across the two hosts, and I am
trying to develop a build spec for a new production environment so I can
automate the builds. Even though pkginfo reports the same version of the
software, modinfo does not, and I was working to resolve the differences.
Both hosts were working at the time.
Now, there isn't even a laser light
coming out of the cable. The switch can't see the card - obviously, no light,
no connectivity.
The kernel module fails to load, but no error message is
displayed. There is a device utility, emlxadm, that doesn't see the cards
either. What really has me stumped is that if I boot to fail-safe mode, the
device driver loads, and the switch sees the card.

There is something
happening at boot time that prevents the emlxs driver from loading, but I
can't find it. A comparison of the faulty box with the working one shows some
services that are different, but starting services takes place way after the
kernel loads its drivers.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks
in advance.

Regards,
Steve
