V440 raidctl vs SVM

I just received some V440's and would like some opinion on raidctl vs
SVM. As a rule of thumb hardware RAID has always been prefered over
software RAID. I like the idea of hardware RAID with raidctl but is seem
to be lacking features such as a hot spare as with SVM. Am I missing
something or is raidctl just a barebones RAID utility.
