Console problems when not using GUI packages

When installing Solaris 7 11/99 Intel Edition, we selected the core system
support option. We included several packages in addition to the core
packages, but we did not install any GUI software (e.g. CDE, X windows).
We've observed a couple of problems with the console that we don't remember
seeing when we installed the entire distribution and used the Common Desktop
Environment. We are running several instances of Solaris on two different IA
platforms (AD450NX and C440GX). We are using various monitors, keyboards,
and KVM switches (some monitors/keyboards are connected directly to the
server).

Here's a description of the first problem: We begin to log in from the
console (e.g. enter a username but not a password) and then wait until the
timeout period expires (as defined by the line that begins with TIMEOUT in
/etc/default/login). After the timeout, the login prompt disappears and
reappears, but from that point on nothing you type at the keyboard is
displayed on the console screen. You can still log in and execute commands.
You just can't see what you are typing. Output from the programs that you
are running is displayed as usual. If we connect to the system via telnet,
everything seems to work fine. Rebooting was the only way we could resolve
the problem at the console. Our current work-around is to comment out the
TIMEOUT line in /etc/default/login.

The second problem is that sometimes the console screen will just "freeze
up". Nothing happens no matter what you type. Unfortunately, we have not
figured out how to reproduce this issue. Fortunately, it doesn't happen very
often and when it does, you can still connect to the system remotely. Again,
the only way we can fix the console is to reboot. Someone thinks this might
happen after repeated failed log-in attempts. Maybe it has something to do
with interactions between the server hardware and the input/output devices?

Any ideas what might be causing these problems or how we can avoid them?

Thanks,
John Spurgeon
