Solaris9 format cmd hangs

I have a problem with a new SunFire V240. Uptime 56 days.
Solaris 9, two 72G disks mirrored with SDS, 4G ram.
I entered the format command and it output the normal "searching for disks" but then it hung.
I couldn't kill it with ctl + d
Logged in to another window and kill -9 the pid & ppid . I also closed the initial window.
ps -ef still shows the format cmd running with ppid 1
bash-2.05$ ps -ef |grep format
   root 5985 1 0 10:36:35 ? 0:04 format
Truss -p <pid> shows no activity.

No problems show up with metastat.
Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it without rebooting?
