C compiler cannot create executables

Hi,

I am trying to install GNU tar on my Solaris 9 server.
when i run the configure i am getting the following
error. Please can someone advise what i am missing?. I
insalled GCC also.

# ./configure

checking for gawk... no
checking for mawk... no
checking for nawk... nawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for style of include used by make... GNU
checking for gcc... gcc

configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
