Thanks to all those that replied.
Basically, you can label the disk without causing any damage to the
information concerning the other partitions.
The general consensus was:
1) Don't format a live disk, if you don't have to - partition up other
unused disks.
2) Be extremely careful. Have backups of vtocs and data just in case.
