Cannot configure X on my Thinkpad with Solaris 10

Hi all,

I need to run a couple of Solaris X applications on my Thinkpad A31p laptop,
so I installed Solaris 10 (relatively) successfully. I still have one problem
outstanding with my video card and X, for which I need some help.

The video card is ATI mobility Firegl 7800. During the installation of the OS
the LCD works well (resolutionwise), so I know that the system is capable of
displaying X properly.

When I boot, the X server crashes, with the following error: "The X-server can
not be started on display :0"

Next, I run kdmconfig, and I try to configure the Xserver, either Xorg, or
Xsun.

When I configure it as Xsun VGA, the server works, but the display looks bad.

I've tried ATI RAGE 128/RADEON, VESA, XF86-ATI Radeon (etc), with XVGA and
15inch monitor, with no luck. The server crashes and I have to reboot. I think
that the XF86-ATI Radeon option is my best bet, and should work. (see below)

Then, I tried the Xorg server and I got a dump of the log
(/var/log/Xorg.0.log) where it is stated that the ATI driver does support this
card (explicitly mentioned), but "xf86LinearVidMem: failed to open
/dev/fbs/aperture" and "either /dev/fbs/aperture or /dev/xsvc device driver
required". (The Xsun log file contains these errors as well)

So, aparently the OS install did not create these devices. Is there any way to
create them now by explicit installation? A pointer to a document or howto
would be very helpful.

Thanks,

John Ioannou
