Solaris >8 Free Memory (Does it include inactive inode cache entry linked pages?)

Hello Solaris Gurus;

I have read (many times) the following URL

Adrian Cockcraft's "Help! I've Lost my Memory!" at

http://sunsite.nstu.nsk.su/sunworldonline/swol-10-1995/swol-10-perf.html

and the following article from O'Reilly's Online Catalog on "System
Performacne Tuning, 2nd Edition"

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/spt2/chapter/ch04.html

I've a few questions.

Top most is the consensus that in Solaris 8, the vmstat "free" column
figures are much more meaningful.

However, I have in place a system (actually my customer's) whose free
column figures in vmstat keeps on falling.

Now I have told them that memory shortage in Solaris (>8) will show up
if (vmstat's sr>0 and vmstat -p's anonymous paging api/apo has
significant figures)

I have put forward that the free memory keeps on falling because Solaris
used up the available memory for file system caches.

Since the customer's system (sr=0 and there are no numbers in api/apo in
vmstat -p), I've assured them that the system does not have a memory
issue despite the falling figures in vmstat "free" column.

But that contradicts the above "more meaningful statement for vmstat
free for Solaris >8" from various Sun articules.

Why then the falling figures for "free" under vmstat??

Does Solaris (>8) vmstat "free" column figures include pages still
attached to inactive inode cache entries? Or do they not?

Could the situation above come about because pages still attached to
active inode cache entries are NOT counted as free?

One more thing, fsflush only flushes file system caches right? It does
not touch anonymous memory pages correct?

But the memory scanning daemon measured by vmstat's sr scans everything.
Am I right?

Trying to get the whole picture here.

Warmest Regards
Steven Sim
