unix username lenght

Hi Guru:

Is there is limitation on the lenght of characters for a username. This question is for solaris 8 and upwards.
I am able to create a unix username with 9 characters, but it complains lenght too long.

I just open this discussion and get a feel on this. So please feel to reply with any information, implications or concerns with this.

I shall summerize.
