Thanks to both Musa Williams and James Scott.

The machine once had Veritas management software on it - thus the
vx-rootdisk boot label - this was not related to the disk error.

After seeing the errors on multiple blocks in /var/adm/messages...

etc. more bad blocks - (though after a re-seating the drives I haven't
seen these errors,even under heavy i/o....???)

It was determined in all likelihood disk 1 is bad. Hopefully its
