question relate to "ulimit"?

We have solaris 9 on SUN server. The application I used need setup
"nofiles" to 1024. I tried to change it, but not successful. Does there
has way I can change it without change to "root"?

       %ulimit -a
      time(seconds) unlimited
      file(blocks) unlimited
      data(kbytes) unlimited
      stack(kbytes) 8192
      coredump(blocks) unlimited
      nofiles(descriptors) 256
      vmemory(kbytes) unlimited

     %ulimit -n 1024
     %ulimit -a
      time(seconds) unlimited
      file(blocks) unlimited
      data(kbytes) unlimited
      stack(kbytes) 8192
      coredump(blocks) unlimited
      nofiles(descriptors) 256
      vmemory(kbytes) unlimited
