very weird problem ( map the username with id number)

now i have solaris 8
and after a clean reboot , after sometime(not defined maybe hour maybe a
day), when i use a su -u username command i get such message

enviroment variable could not be set,

and when u ls -al or any directory (/var/mail for example) the userid is not
a name it's a uid number

for example
-rw-rw---- 1 0 6 2151740 Nov 29 17:05 root

instead of
-rw-rw---- 1 root mail 2151740 Nov 29 17:05 root

which i think it's a matter of map or alias the name with the id number of
the user!!!
p.s: the system become normal after reboot (weather no argument or -r
switch)

any idea!!

thanks
mostafa
