NIS+ servers unreachable-a strange problem-URGENT

There is a problem with the NIS+ in our network.
This network consists of one master and one replica and 10 systems beings
served by them.
The NIS+ serversa re Solaris 5.9 and all others are 5.8.
Two of the systems which are behind a different firewall are having problems
with NIS+.Frequently there happens a NIS+ outage which lasts for atleast 1.5
hours. In this duration, the NIS servers are unreachable, cron jobs stop
running, sendmail doesnt work and ssh to that machine by a NIS+ user
fails.Syslog logs only messages about sshd- with timeout before
authentication error.and cron gives out the message: NIS+ servers
unreachable.
And some anomalies that I found are :
1.the command ls works fine but ls -ltr hangs.
2.ps -ef also doesnt show the full list and hangs midway.
Without we doing anything,NIS+ starts working again.

As the problem occurs in the production servers, its a severity 1 issue which
needs to be solved immediately.
Can anyone help with this?

Thanks,
Saranya.
