Does anyone have the do's/don'ts about installing patches for Solaris
10, or any version of Solaris for that matter, on a Sun Ultra 3 mobile
laptop, aka. TadPole SparcLE?
I just got mine, pre-installed with Solaris 10, and attempted to install
the Solaris 10 latest recommended patches. The patches themselves
installed fine but after rebooting the problems began.
Apparently the Solaris patches over write certain files, some of which
are (/etc/dacf.conf, /etc/name_to_major and others) that Tadpole has
specific information needed to boot and run the latptop.
I attempted to boot from the CD, examine which files changed by compring
to the CD, and place those files back. I got the system booted but with
many, many more errors than I cared to deal with.
I opted for re-installation from the supplied Sun/Mobile Solaris 10 CD's
and got back to normal but with any Recommened/Security patches besides
what came with the Solaris 10 3/05 media.
I'd like to be able to install a patch if necessary, particularly
security patches, but at the moment I don't know what patches will
affect the files that can't be changed from the Sun/Tadpole defaults.
Thanks and as always a summary will follow.
