SMC (Solaris Management Console)

On a fresh install of Sparc Solaris 9 (on an e420r) - the SMC app works.
Upon patching to yesterday's 9_Recommended - it fails - the applets all have
red stop signs in the console, and it says someting like - 'There is no
server running...' and 'No Solaris Management Console server was available
on the specified server.'

This is in the serial console from Tera Term:

kermit console login:

java.io.FileNotFoundException: /var/sadm/smc/properties/.server (No such
file or directory)

erWbemServer.java:61)
Starting Solaris Management Console server version 2.1.0.
endpoint created: :898
Solaris Management Console server is ready.

it's true there is no /var/sadm/smc/properties/.server file or dir - here is
the listing:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root bin 512 Oct 14 09:54 ./
drwxr-xr-x 7 root bin 512 Oct 14 09:54 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 11484 Oct 14 09:20 cacerts
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 601460 Oct 14 09:54 classlist.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19394 Oct 14 09:57 registry.properties
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17603 Oct 14 09:54 registry.ser
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17603 Oct 14 09:54 registry.ser.backup

from a server w/ working smc (and with an earlier 9_Recommended) that dir
listing looks like this:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root bin 512 Apr 8 2005 ./
drwxr-xr-x 7 root bin 512 Apr 8 2005 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 593742 Apr 8 2005 classlist.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 593742 Apr 8 2005 classlist.txt.new
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19395 May 9 18:25 registry.properties
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17603 Apr 8 2005 registry.ser
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17603 Apr 8 2005 registry.ser.backup

I have tried to stop/start/restart the server with the init.wbem script in
/etc/init.d
Could this be classpath or new JDK related?

Thanks for any hints!
SG
