Dear managers,
I am trying to plump up third ethernet interface of a SunFire 240R
without rebooting the machine. I have created /etc/hostname.bge2, made
an entry in /etc/hosts and added the netmask in /etc/netmasks. I am now
trying
ifconfig bge2
or
ifconfig bge2 up
and always get
ifconfig: status: SIOCGLIFFLAGS: bge2: no such interface
What am I missing? Thanks a lot!

BTW: There is no cable plugged into the ethernet port yet. Is this
important?
