Clarification: Problem with LiveUpgrade lucreate from Sol7 to Sol8 : CPIO error.

Hi Folks,

** Original mail content below this clarification **

As Tom Crummey pointed out to me, I have not clarified what version of the
LiveUpgrade packages I have installed on the existing system.

The version of liveUpgrade is the version of LiveUpgrade for Solaris 8
(i.e.the target OS) and not Solaris 7 (i.e. the original OS).

Sorry for not pointing that out in the original mail.

David

======= Original mail =======

Hi all,

I am having problems with upgrading a solaris 7 system to solaris 8 using
LiveUpgrade and I wonder if any one can help me out.

We have a number of domains on an E10K server which we are migrating to a 6900
system and upgrading the OS in the process (we use an intermediary system to
perfom the LiveUpgrade due to OS restrictions). We have successfully
migrated, includig the upgrade, one system (a pre-production one), but when we
go to migrate the production systems we run into problems.

Upgrade path is the following :

* Launch FlashArchive of current "live" system
* Jumpstart intermediary system with the FlashArchive image, setting it up as
a dublicate of the
live system (except for IP addresses, etc.)
* Patch intermediary system with the latest Sun Patch Cluster for Solaris 7
* Install patch 108414 for Solaris 7 (CPIO bug) - # CPIO during the lucreate
phase is the issue
* Launch LiveUpgrade using a second internal disk as the target disk
* Once the upgrade has been successful, boot off the target disk, set up the
system as a duplicate
of the live system, except now it is on solaris 8
* Launch FlashArchive of the newly upgraded system
* Jumpstart the chosen domain in the 6900 system with the new FlashArchive
* Configure and hand over as the new "live" system (shutting down old system,
changing IP
  addresses, etc.)

The issue is at the lucreate stage. The target disk slices, etc. are OK so
the UFS of the target disk works fine. When it attempts to copy the content
of the original disk to the target disk it fails with the following error for
all target slices (/var in the example below):

ERROR: Copy of file system / directory </var> failed: continuing to copy.
ERROR: Copy of file system / directory </var> failed: continuing to copy.
ERROR: A mail will be sent at the end of the copy listing the reason for
failure.
ERROR: A mail will be sent at the end of the copy listing the reason for
failure.
Copying of file system / directory </opt> is in progress...
ERROR: CPIO/FIND errors in the copy operation are listed below:
****************************************
USAGE:
       cpio -i[bcdfkmrstuvBSV6] [-C size] [-E file] [-H hdr] [-I file [-M
msg]] [-R id] [patterns]
       cpio -o[acvABLV] [-C size] [-H hdr] [-O file [-M msg]]
       cpio -p[adlmuvLV] [-R id] directory

We are using the following lucreate syntax to create the target disk system
(N.B. this works on later versions of Solaris and has worked on the
pre-production system):

lucreate -c "Solaris7_old" \
        -m /:/dev/dsk/c0t2d0s0:ufs \
        -m -:/dev/dsk/c0t2d0s1:swap \
        -m /var:/dev/dsk/c0t2d0s5:ufs \
        -m /opt:/dev/dsk/c0t2d0s6:ufs -n "Solaris8_new"

I thought that the issue with cpio was resolved with the addition of the patch
108414 (we have the latest release of this patch), but that doesn't seem to be
the case.

I have looked at the issue being an environment one but haven't really come up
with anything particular - the pre-prod system that worked and the prod
systems that don't work have essentially the same environment set up, so I
don't know where to start looking.

I have searched the Sun Manager archives and the net with no success.

Any help, comments, directions of where to look would be very welcome, as at
this stage, we are under a lot of pressure to get the 2 remaining production
systems upgraded and migrated as fast as possible.

Best regards,

David
