Can't remove a directory

I've having a problem with a Solaris 8 system where I can't remove a
directory in /var/tmp. I also noticed that the . And .. Files are
missing from this directory. If I try to do an rm -r of the directory
it says, "Can't remove directory xxxx, file exists". If I try to remove
a higher level directory I get "rm: cannot change to parent of directory
yyyy/xxxx: No such file or directory. Anybody have a clue?
