Maybe I should added the following information to the original post:
This is a running NIS environment with no other problems than this one user
entry.

Hi all,
I have searched the world and found no answers to this problem:
I have added a user to NIS in the following manner -
I added the new user to the passwd file with a known password hash.
I added the new group to the groups file.
I ran make passwd from /var/yp.
I ran make group from /var/yp.
I got success reports for both makes.
I waited the requisite amount of time and then from another machine on our
network I tried to su to the new user and got:
su: user username does not exist
ypcat passwd shows the passwd entry is there.
ypcat group shows the group entry is there.
ypmatch username passwd shows the user entry.
getent passwd username returns nothing.
I'm stymied.
Any ideas?
