Laptop and USB To Serial Cable

Just got a new laptop and noticed it doesn't have a serial connection.
However, I can purchase a USB to Serial cable.... Has anyone had
problems with these connecting to various servers and switches? Are
some better than others? And is there any special setup to configure
the connection or is it just the same connection method via the serial
selection on your terminal software?
