Hello Managers,
I am in need of some advice on how to go abt on a
printing solution which might sound like 'Silly'.
Excuse me for that :)
We recently upgraded our DUMP charecter based work
stations to thin clients. As its a hospital which has
100s of counters where various reports are printed, we
had been using charecter mode printing on Dot Matrix
Printers connected local to the DUMP terminals using
escape sequence.
Since we upgraded charecter terminals to GUI
thinclients (XDMCP based), our application was also
made graphical, and the reports were converted in to
Post script format.

Our thin clients have core linux running on it and it
also has lp service, and I could configure printers on
the thin clients (As remote printers in the solaris
server) and could take print outs of charecter files
without any problems( eg : if I say #lp -d thin1
/etc/vfstab, it would print fine on the printer
connected to my thinclient ). But if I am unable to
print any start office / PS reports on these thin
clients locally in a proper fashion. It prints the
post script commands as it is. The problem persists if
I connect the same printer directly to the serial port
of the solaris server.

The DMP which I am using is Epson 80 LX 300. I guess
it does not support PS.

the printing was found absolutely fine when I
connected some laser jet printers to one of the
servers. But its next to impossible for us to upgrade
all the 100 odd DMPs to Laser one shot.

Is there any work around ? I am sure there must be. I
have thought of ghost scripts, but not sure how
practical it is, as I've never tried it beofre.
Have any one of you tried ghost scripts ? How do I
configure my printer thru this in solaris ?
What is the format I need to convert my Post script
files in to, to print it properly on my DMP ?
Does ghost script support EPSON DMPs ?

Please provide me with as much information as you can.

Greetings,
Thank you verymuch in advance.
Abhilash.
