Hello Managers,

a few weeks ago Sam Mabjish asked what to do when the /var directory get
full. The suggestion was to

      1) clean up all the log and junk file in /var

      2) Move /var/sadm to another location to create more space in /var,

      3) Create /var/sadm as a symbolic software link to the new location
where it was moved.

In the additional summary David Foster warned not to do #2 or #3 if the
directory isn't availiable early enough in the boot cycle. In my case I
used nfs .

Though in the mean time I reconfigured/repartitioned my system to have
enough space for everthing and though I put sadm back to its original place
I'm neither able to upgrade my system from Solaris 2.8 to 2.9 nor to
liveupgrade to 2.8. Booting from the Solaris 8 9/04 DVD the operating
system is not recognised, so it asks me if it should perform an initial
install, lu allows me to create an alternate boot environment but it does
not allow me to upgrade it.

"showrev -a" gives me the following:

      Hostname: <Hostname>
      Hostid: <Hostid>
      Release: 5.8
      Kernel architecture: sun4u
      Application architecture: sparc
      Hardware provider: Sun_Microsystems
      Domain: <Domain>
Kernel version: SunOS 5.8 Generic 108528-22 May 2003

      OpenWindows version:
      X11 Version 6.4.1 19 February 2003

      showrev: get_env_var(FJSVcpc.tar.tar, SUNW_PATCHID)

"patchadd -p" tells me there are "No patches installed" but the directories
/var/sadm/pkg and /var/sadm/patches are full of files that corresponde to
the recommended patches .

Trying to upgrade to the same release (2.8), LU states:

Validating the contents of the media </server>.
The media is a standard Solaris media.
The media contains an operating system upgrade image.
The media contains <Solaris> version <8>.
The media contains patches for the product.
Locating upgrade profile template to use.
Locating the operating system upgrade program.
Checking for existence of previously scheduled Live Upgrade requests.
Creating upgrade profile for BE <Solaris8A>.
      Updating ABE's /etc/vfstab file.
The update of the vfstab file on the ABE succeeded.
Determining packages to install or upgrade for BE <Solaris8A>.
Performing the operating system upgrade of the BE <Solaris8A>.
CAUTION: Interrupting this process may leave the boot environment
unstable or unbootable.
ERROR: The upgrade failed; pfinstall returned these diagnostics:

The operating system patch installation completed.
The Solaris upgrade of the BE <Solaris8A> failed.

Do you know a solution or do I need to completely set up my workstation?

Thanks in advance

Daniel
