dev/pts error

Okay, I'm not making any headway on this, and it's in no FAQ or
knowledgebase that I can find. So ...

Trying to log some activity with 'script' - when any user but root
runs it, it fails with "/dev/pts/#: Permission denied" where # is the
device number, which differs from time to time.

Comparing this system with another, nearly identical, shows no
differences in /dev or /devices, or in the links between them, in
either ownerships, permissions, major or minor numbers, or anything
else I can find yet.

Any ideas?

Solaris 8, the 02/02 release, on 280R boxes, and really annoying.
