How to transfer Excel files in French to Solaris

Hello,

Hoping you can help me with this. What we are doing is
taking an Excel spreadsheet, saving it as a .csv file
and ftp it to a Sun system running Solaris 9. We want
to load it into our Oracle system, so that we have our
French Canadian translations in place.

However, we are having some issues with characters
that have accent marks, etc., converting to control
characters in UNIX. This causes the data to load
improperly. For example:

File dattente de problhme de programmation

is changed under Solaris to:

File dattente de problhme de programmation

Doing some research, it appears that much depends on
the Character Set that are set up on the different
systems (see below). How can I tell what character
set is in use on Solaris?

Many databases are created with the default database
CHARACTER SETS and database NATIONAL CHARACTER SETS,
like US7ASCII. Databases with US7ASCII can store data
using 128 characters (upper case and lower case
letters of the English alphabet, numbers, and a few
symbols). Databases with WE8ISO8859P1 can store data
using 256 characters, accommodating most European
languages. WE8ISO8859P1 includes all characters in
US7ASCII and is a superset of US7ASCII, which is a
subset of WE8ISO8859P1.

Thank you!
