Checking remoted inet daemons

Does anybody know how to check INET processes remotely? I'm trying to check
the status of HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP and MySQL on a server without actually doing a
"ps awx" on the machine.

I'm trying to run a script on computer A that will check that HTTP, HTTPS,
SMTP and MySQL are running on computer B and if not then computer A will send
a mail message to me saying "<service name> on computer B is not running". I
don't want to have to run anything fancy like RPCs or whatever...

Telnetting port 80, 443, etc would work manually, but there is no way to put
that in a script running under cron.

Any other ideas?

Ben
