how to speed up dd, USB settings and config diskette

Hi
1. DD.
Can anyone offer some advice on speeding up "dd"?
What is the best way to calculate the block size?

2. USB.
Also i'm running solaris 10. The disk i'm trying to backup with dd is actually
a laptop disk (has solaris 9 on it) that i've fitted to an external USB caddy.
My sun 1500 can see the disk and access it (rmformat -l confirms this).
The disk in question is 20 gig, using dd with block set at 8k, it's taking 7-8
hours to create the backup. is this the speed you would expect?
Anyone know how to force Solaris to use the USB disk with usb 2.0? There is a
script on sun's site http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/USB-Faq.html for
setting the USB standard but this script doesn't work with Solaris 10.

3. config diskette for Solaris 9x86
The reason i'm backing up the disk with DD is because i've lost the first cd
of the Solaris 9x86 8/03. Later versions of solaris 9 and 10 don't offer as
good legacy USB support. This causes solaris to hang on bootup.
I do however have the config diskette for the orig version of solaris 9x86
8/03. If i boot the laptop with this config disk, i can use the laptop
properly (it's a mobile jumpstart).
Is there anyway to transfer the orig boot config diskette to the hard disk
permanently?

Thanks
Dan.
