Disabling root login

Hi gurus,
I need to disable direct root login on my solaris 8,9, and 10 sparc
servers.
I will do this by enabling CONSOLE in /etc/default/login and by disabling
root login in sshd.conf.

It works fine, but now I realize I can no longer use rsync via ssh with
public key auth as root for replication of root owned files.

I need help on disabling root login directly without using su, and still
being able to rsync as root. Is that possible? If not any ideas on a
workaround?

Thanks!
