cannot log in to this server

This one has Sun support stumped. Maybe one of you folks have come across
this.

I have a V880 upon which I have done a new install of Solaris 8 end user,
and then customized the heck out of it. The mods I make to customize the
server are the same mods as I have done on dozens of other servers, so I
can just about do it in my sleep. I think that I did and that's my problem.

When the server comes up I get the console login as expected, but no matter
what I type I am immediately returned to the console login prompt. I have
booted from cdrom several times and checked the contents, permissions, etc
of both the passwd and shadow files and also the var/adm/messages.
All look fine. Can anyone suggest another file that I should check on
this server that is preventing login?

TIA, and of course I'll summarize.
