HP tape drive in E250 doesn't want to work

I'm setting up an E250. Found an HP DDS3 still in a sealed box on a
shelf. May have been bought by previous employee, but no one knew. It is
a C1554 Trade-ready meachanism:

http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.asp?sku=1599960&jumpid=oc_R1002_USENC-001_HP%20C1554_%20DDS-3%20Drive

I found a user guide for it at:

http://www.nissho-ele.co.jp/storage/manual/hp/dds3/C1554C.pdf

and compared notes between that and the E250 Owner's Guide.

I have installed DDS3 drives in E250's before, but they were bought from
Sun for Sun and simply worked. This drive looked excactly right, matched
the pictures in the Sun documents, and everything fit. The C1554 User
Guide had a table of how to set the dip switches for various platforms,
including Sun. It also explained the setting of the SCSI ID. I set the
dips as:

1,2,3,4,5 and 8 on; 6 and 7 off.

I set the SCSI ID to 100 or 4.

I did a "shutdown -i 5", opened up the E250, clipped on my wrist ground,
followed all the instructions to install it, and then did a "boot -r".
When it came up, I put in a tape and did an "mt status". It looked
normal. Recognized the drive, told me what it was, and indicated that
the tape was sitting at file 0.

# mt status
HP DDS-3 4MM DAT tape drive:
    sense key(0x0)= No Additional Sense residual= 0 retries= 0
    file no= 0 block no= 0

So, then I wrote a backup script that used ufsdump. Started the script.
It hung on the first write. Then I discovered that it would hang on an
"mt rewind". I tried another tape (both brand new) and got the same
result. The output to /var/adm/messages is copied at the bottom.

So, does this look like I need to try some other dip switch settings? Or
is it possible that I actually need to download some drivers and install
them?

Any advice appreciated.
