Solaris x86

What's the first thing that pops in your head when you hear that?

Would you run a mission critical large application on a system running x86?

We're running a pair of 9 year old Ultra 2's currently, and are looking to
upgrade. We could obviously get bigger hardware if we could get a
windows-based system instead of something that's Sparc-based.

If we were to change our OS to Linux, it would cost an extra 10k for us to
be migrated from Solaris to Linux by the app manufacturer. Therefore,
Linux is not an option. They consider Solaris x86 to be solaris, so we
wouldn't get hit with that 10k "migration fee".

I have heard nothing but bad stuff about Solaris x86, but this was back in
1999. Has it gotten better? Would you sleep at night knowing the heart of
your company was running on it? I'm pretty solidly in the "no" category,
but maybe things have changed in the last six years.

Thoughts?
