puzzling disk io performance

I have a V440 where I will be running a local database for our testing.
I have created 3 stripes across the 4 internal disks.

I used

metainit d30 1 4 c1t0d0s3 c1t1d0s0 c1t2d0s3 c1t3d0s3

metainit d40 1 4 c1t0d0s3 c1t1d0s0 c1t2d0s3 c1t3d0s3

metainit d50 1 4 c1t0d0s3 c1t1d0s0 c1t2d0s3 c1t3d0s3

Then I ran newfs on the new metadevices and mounted using default
options. I am seeing TERRIBLE disk IO performance when trying to create
files. I have / mirrored onto 2 drives and I am seeing about a 10x
performance improvement to the mirror than I am to the stripe when
trying to run "mkfile 1g bigfile". That is not what I would have
envisioned. Adding external disk arrays is not an option at this point,
but I am stumped why I am seeing such crappy performance on the stripe
and decent performance on the mirror.

As always, your help is much appreciated.

Ryan
