Bad Exabyte tape drive?

We run Solaris 8 on an E3000 and have had recurring problems with an
Exabyte 8705 7/14g 8mm tape drive.

Almost every night we get the following error:

We bought new tapes and that didn't help. We bought a refurbished tape
drive (same model) and that didn't help.

I tried 'mt -f /dev/rmt/0 erase' as suggested on this list by someone
with a similar problem, but that didn't help (the same error is
generated during the 'erase' process as during the backup).

Is it likely that our "new" tape drive is bad, or are there other
potential causes of the problem that I should look for?

Thanks,
