SUMMARY: How to set up the mail of root to send mail to

Thanks very much for all the great reponses. I really appreciate all of your help.
 
A Summary:
In a .forward file you need 2 entries.
root
anne.bond@ombudsman.gov.au

The first one tells mail to keep a local copy and the second send a copy to you elsewhere.

or

you can add a line in /etc/aliases

root: <account>

where <account> is whatever you like

and then run the command newaliases which will read that file and

rebuild the aliases db.

After that all email send to root will be sent to <account>
