Dual Boot Devices

We are running Sparc Solaris 9. Our setup is probably a little different
than most because we boot our system off of our external StorEdge 3300 (we
don't use the internal hard drive to boot). We want to use the internal
hard drive to boot only if there is a problem with our StoreEdge device. We
want to get the system to a point where it doesn't matter if we boot from
the StorEdge or the internal drive.

Once it doesn't matter which device we boot from, we'd like to install
recommended patches to the internal hard drive, run the system for a while
to test the patches, then when we are sure that the patches don't cause any
problems, apply the patches to the StorEdge device and boot off that device
as we do now.

Seems to me that there has to be a better way to do what we want to do. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,

John
