I found text book reason for your problem:

Source Facilities VS. Priority Levels page 267 Darrell Ambro Solaris
System Administration.
The asterisk (*) is NOT a Priority Level ONLY a Source Facility. (
can't use on right only on left )

Interesting though you say it used to work....???

Subject: "unknown priority name *" in syslog.conf

Environment: SunOS 5.8 <node> Generic_117350-12 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Ultra-250

Trying to modify syslog.conf for sudo logging.
Added the line:"local2.* /var/adm/mesages" (whitespace is <TAB>).
This should cause all "local2" messages to log to /var/adm/messages.
When I HUP the syslogd daemon it posts to the console "syslogd: line 32:

unknown priority name "*" "

This used to work. Was something changed in the latest Required_8
patchkit?
Yes, it does work if I explicitly specify local2.info, local2.notify,
etc.
but that is a lot of typing (potential for typos the way I type).
