We are in the process of upgrading our hardware from Sunfire v440 's ( 2 x 1G cpu's , 8G RAM) to more powerful systems because they just cannot support the # of users we have to support.

The current implementation can only support 50 users satisfactorily. During one of our load testing session, we maxed out the servers with 4 x 1 G cpu, 16G Mem and ran 92 users satisfactorily. The problem is we have to be able to support up to 1000 users.

Oracle data files are on EMC Clariion CX 500 so disk I/O is not a problem. Results from our load testing analyis indicate that the CPU is maxed out early in the load test process, memory is also not an issue. We are currently licensed for 4 cpu's (oracle). We are aware that oracle considers 1 ultrasparc 4 cpu as 2 cpu for licensing purposes.

The apps include apache/oracle9ias frontend and oracle enterprise server 9 backend . The Cpu's were maxed out by oracle processes pretty quickly. The front end apps are being tunned to improve queries and reduce unecessary cpu cycles. It is however obvious that these hardware do not have the Oomph to meet out needs and we are researching upgrades paths.

We have been proposed V490, V880 and the V1280. we are not too sure which of these offer the best investment for the future.

We'll appreciate any hits, tips or pointers.

Many Thanks.
