Failed to create / write to, utmp utmpx.

Hi everyone,

This one is quite urgent...

I have a Solaris 7, Ultra 10 that crashed this afternoon.
Low patch level, 106541-02. Filesystem 90% full, 360mb free.

Upon booting, we get the common:

-----------------
INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx

INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "

INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "

INIT: SINGLE USER MODE
-----------------

>From here we were unable to get into single user mode. It
kept spitting is back to the: "ENTER RUN LEVEL" prompt.

We therefore booted from CDROM. We fsck'd the root filesystem
from there, and were able to mount it.

Rebooted, and we get the same thing about utmpx.

Back to booting from CDROM, we remount the filesystem.
Root contains all vital filesystems (/usr, /var, etc)
I am able to touch/create/modify anything I'd like... but
for the life of me, I can't get the machine to boot up
with / as read-write.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot,
-marc westerlind
