install of sol 9

I have a v100 & an 280R. 2 hard drives. Both running solaris 8 with
disksuite mirroring.
Plan to:

Break mirror
install solaris on one of the drives
get that up
mount the other drive that still has the sol 8 partition
copy the files i need from there
then mirror the sol 9

anyone doing this before can tell me
what else i might need to do?

also currently this sol 8 is just 1 filesystem of "/"

is there any benefit to making more than just "/" filesystem?

like /, /var, /opt - making those seperate filesystems.
