dtlogin: received signal 11

getting this error on Solaris 8 (latest patches), when trying to connect
an xterminal using XDM. dtlogin is running on the Sun, and gives me a
login window. After entering userid and password, the window remains
black, and the login does not proceed and this error is given in the
Xerrors log file. I have seen similar reports in the newsgroups, but no
solution other than to install patches, which I have. Can anyone help?
