Thanx for all the replies.

so far the only suggestion that worked, was to just use 'halt' at the command
line, as the other options did not work. I am using securecrt, but it could be
the keyboard set up that is the cause of my problem.

It depends on the terminal application. If it is hyperterminal try CTRL-BREAK
or CTRL-SHIFT-BREAK.
