Thanks to those who have responded suggesting I check the ftpusers file. Sorry
that I left that detail out when I orignally posted. The ftpusers file
contains the standard entries -- no general user names have been added.

I went so far as to create a new, empty home directory for a user having the
problem, whereby eliminating anything related to .netrc, .login, .tcshrc
files, but again this gained me nothing.

I have just recently built a new system with Solaris 9 and having the same
problem. Again, this affects some users, not all. One strange thing I did come
across was the user's password. In this instance the user has a password where
the first character is '-' ( a dash ). Just as a whim, I used this password
for another account and oddly enough I have the same problem. If I change the
password so that the first character is not a '-' (a dash) then the user can
get logged in with ftp. Snoop and truss show nothing to indicate any problem.

It makes no difference if connecting with a DNS name or an IP address, or
connecting from another Solaris system or a Windows system.

Thanks for the help.

Dale
