Since I posted my summary, I have received some further responses.
A number of people are using Dell laptops and are happy with them. In fact I
have borrowed one while I complete a firewall build project here. I am quite
happy with it, although it is much heavier and bigger than the IBM 240x.
A number of people have provided further feed back about USB -> Serial
converters. It seems kingsqueak was just unlucky. No else has had issues
with unwanted breaks or other misbehaviour.
