core file with wrong filesize

Hi everybody,

I've encoutered a strage inconsistency of a core file size.
We're running an application Server with Sol 8 and the (almost) latest
patches.
Last saturday it crashed and produced a core file. When you look at the file

size it shows 10mb.
After the server had crashed it came up (after a power off/on) and started
the fsck. The file system showed 95% filled (df -k). So I booted in single
user mode and run the fsck again. Fsck showed no problems or
inconsistencies.
But, when you delete the core file, about 6.5 GB (!!!) of disk space was
freed ?
Does anybody has an idea what causes this behaviour ?

TIA
may
